How does it affect the body? (Pharmacodynamics)

Ciprofloxacin is one of the fastest-acting and effective antimicrobial agents. The principle of its effect on the body is to inhibit bacterial DNA gyrase, prevent the growth and reproduction of bacteria and their complete destruction,

The medicine affects both gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms. For the human body as a whole, the drug is not toxic, does not provoke the development of resistance to other antibiotics, and helps to cope with bacteria that are resistant to drugs of the tetracycline and penicillin groups.

Indications for use:

As a local antibiotic, the medicine is used in ophthalmology in the treatment of diseases such as:

  • Blepharitis . A general name for a fairly large group of eye diseases, the main symptom of which is chronic inflammation of the edges of the eyelid.
  • Subacute and acute conjunctivitis . The combined name for eye diseases in which inflammatory processes occur on the outer mucous membrane of the eyeball and on the inner surface of the eyelid.
  • Blepharoconjunctivitis . A disease characterized by a rapidly developing inflammatory process along the edges of the eyelid and damage to the palpebral and orbital conjunctiva.
  • Keratitis . A disease in which the cornea of the eye becomes inflamed, becomes cloudy, and becomes covered with ulcers. The patient experiences noticeable pain. Keratitis can develop either as a result of injury or infection.
  • Keratoconjunctivitis . An inflammatory process that involves both the cornea and the area of the palpebral and orbital conjunctiva.
  • Meibomite . In common parlance - barley. An inflammatory process affecting the meibomian glands. Symptoms: pain, hyperemia, swelling and purulent infiltrate in the affected area.
  • Chronic dacryocystitis . Inflammation of the lacrimal sac, which can be caused by complete or partial stenosis of the nasolacrimal duct.
  • Bacterial corneal ulcer . An ulcerative defect of the cornea of the eye caused by a bacterial infection. Accompanied by severe pain. Edema. Decreased vision and clouding of the corneal layer.
  • Bacterial damage to the eyes after injury, removal of a foreign body . An inflammatory process that develops as a result of mechanical damage to the eye area and bacterial infection.

Ciprofloxacin is also used for preoperative prevention of bacterial infections. However, this powerful drug has a number of strict contraindications. These include the following diseases and conditions:

  • ophthalmomycosis and viral eye infection;
  • state of pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • infancy (up to 1 year);
  • allergic reaction to the components of the drug.

Possible adverse reactions

The use of the drug does not pose a danger to the patient, since even the drug in one bottle cannot cause intoxication of the body. Side effects are usually mild. These include:

  • allergic reaction, mainly skin;
  • feeling of nausea;
  • swelling of the eyelids;
  • increased lacrimation;
  • photophobia;
  • the appearance of white crystalline formations.

Immediately after instillation, blurred vision, redness of the conjunctiva and burning are usually noted.

If adverse reactions persist for a long time and cause significant discomfort, you should consult a specialist as soon as possible.

Ciprofloxacin eye drops should be kept out of the reach of children.

The causes of central serous chorioretinopathy are described here.

Temporary photophobia is a common side effect of drug treatment

An effective mydriatic remedy is Cyclomed eye drops.

  • for a bacterial corneal ulcer, the solution is instilled according to the following scheme: on the first day - drop by drop every 15 minutes for 6 hours, then: during the day - drop by drop every half hour; on the second day the interval is increased to an hour. And in subsequent periods - up to four hours;

pharmachologic effect

Ciprofloxacin eye drops have a broad range of action and are suitable for topical use in ophthalmology. The substance inhibits DNA gyrase, disrupts DNA production, growth and division of bacterial microorganisms. With the help of this tool, it is possible to achieve serious morphological changes and rapid death of bacterial cells.

The composition has a bactericidal effect on gram-negative microorganisms during division and dormancy. This is due to the fact that the drug affects not only DNA gyrase, but also provokes lysis of cell walls. At the same time, the substance affects gram-positive bacteria only during division.

Low toxicity for the cells of the macroorganism is associated with the absence of DNA gyrase in their structure. When using ciprofloxacin, there is no parallel synthesis of resistance to other antibiotics that do not belong to the category of gyrase inhibitors. This increases effectiveness against bacteria that are resistant to penicillins, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides and other substances. Getting used to the product develops quite slowly. After using an antibacterial substance, there are almost no persistent bacteria left. At the same time, microbial cells do not have enzymes that inactivate the agent.

"CIPROFLOXACIN": reviews

I was hospitalized after an eye injury. There was severe inflammation and swelling, and they wanted to operate. My attending physician decided to instill ciprofloxacin to relieve the effects of inflammation, just 3 days and the eye was already visible, the redness and swelling had gone away, the eye had completely opened. It turned out that a foreign body had gotten inside. After it was removed, the drops were continued for another 2 weeks - the eye was preserved, vision was normal.

I had conjunctivitis, and I actually had to soak my eyes every morning. Pain, tears, constant pain in the eyes, swelling. I consulted with a local ophthalmologist from the clinic, he advised me to take ciprofloxacin. I saw the price at the pharmacy and thought he was just kidding me. The price of my torment is 40 rubles! I bought it, used it for 5 days and then three more, as the instructions said. The conjunctivitis is completely gone!
